Court awards 2 Million naira Against Police For Beating a Man

The Federal High Court sitting in Jos awarded a man 2 million naira in damages over violation of his rights by the Police.

The man,Mr Chijoike Achi,was reportedly beaten and battered by the security personnel attached to the Special Task Force(STF),who stormed his stop at 25,Ahmadu Bello Way,Jos on March 17,2013.

Justice Ayo Emmanuel,while delivering his judgement,condemned Police Personnel for storming Achi’s shop armed with guns and other assault gadgets to threaten him.

“The officers went to the shop with the intention to intimidate,harass the applicant and the evidence before me,I am satisfied that 1st-4th accused were in flagrant abuse of the fundamental rights of the applicants.

The judge said having looked at exhibits C1-C10,he found and held that a case for the award of damages to Mr Chijoike Achi had been established.“Consequently,the sum of 2 million naira is hereby awarded in favour of the applicant as compensation jointly and severally”he ruled. is your one-stop online news magazine blog.
