Namibia2014: Oshoala,Nwokocha,Oparanozie make Super Falcons squad


Super Falcons Coach, Edwin Okon yesterday named the 21 players for the African Women Championship slated for October 11-25 in Windehoek, Namibia.

Nwokcha, a four time CAF African woman footballer of the year recipient, is leading the galaxy of five other foreign based stars selected to execute the Namibia Championship, which also doubles as the qualifier for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada.

The other professionals, who strolled into the Namibia training without reporting to Abuja camp includes: France-based striker Desire Oparanozie, FK Minsk of Belarus defender ,Onome Ebi, Esther Sunday who plies her professional trade with FK Minsk, Belarus and Francesca Ordega of Pitea IFF, Sweden.

Houston Dash of United States based defender, Osinachi Ohale is the only overseas-based player who has been in training camp in Abuja.

Meanwhile, five World Cup Silver winning Falconet players, Sarah Nnodim, Uchechi Sunday, Chiwendu Ihezuo, Loveth Ayila and Maryam Ibrahim were among the nine players dropped from the Namibia-bound team. Others are Rosemary Okezie, Blessing Edoho, Charity John and Juliet Obi.

The home girls who made the cut for Namibia are skipper Evelyn Nwabuoku, Asisat Oshoala, Precious Dede, Ibubeleye White, Stella Mbachu, Ngozi Okobi and Gloria Iroka.

Others who scaled the hurdle are Ngozi Ebere, Ugo Njoku, Josephine Chukwunonye, Gloria Ofoegbu, Nku Cecilia, Halimat Ayinde, Onyinyechi Ohadugha and Christy Ohiariaku.

Coach Okon admitted it was not easy picking the final 21 players that will don the colours of Nigeria at the AWC, noting that all the 9 players he dropped worked very hard to be in the team.

He revealed that he had settled for a mixture of youth and experience because there are no longer minnows in women football in Africa, stressing that he is optimistic that the squad he picked will reclaim the title for Nigeria.
