Buhari’s inaugural speech, powerful agenda for Nigeria –John Kerry-   PUNCH

The United States Secretary of State, John Kerry, on Friday, described President Muhammadu Buhari’s inaugural speech as laying out “a powerful agenda.”

Kerry, who gave assurance that the United States would support the new administration to tackle insurgency and the economic challenges bedevilling the country, was accosted by journalists within the venue of the inauguration immediately after the event.

He said, “The inauguration is historic and very promising. The President made a very important speech, laid out a very powerful agenda and the United States is prepared to work very closely to help to do and everything we can on the economy, Boko Haram and other issues. The President did a very great job today.”

PDP Congratulates Buhari, Ready for Opposition-THISDAY

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday congratulated  General Muhammadu Buhari as he took office as President.
This is as Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has said that members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming 8th National Assembly would provide credible opposition that would further deepen democracy and promote good governance in Nigeria.
The party in a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary,  Olisa Metuh, Friday, wished the new President success in piloting the affairs of the country in the next four years.
“The PDP wishes General Buhari a successful tenure as President of our dear nation. Indeed, we appreciate the fact that his success would be to the benefit of Nigeria as a nation. “It is against this backdrop that we wish him good health, vigour and wisdom to pilot the affairs of the nation in the next four years.
“We also join millions of Nigerians and the international community in commending and applauding immediate past President Goodluck Jonathan for a smooth transition as well as his democratic credentials and enduring legacies in ensuring the stability of the nation”, the statement said.
The PDP said  that as a party that had nurtured and sustained democracy in the last 16 years, it would remain committed to the democratic ethos as well as the unity, stability and prosperity of Nigeria at all times.
Ekweremadu, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Uche Anichukwu, in Enugu, on the occasion of Nigeria’s 16th Democracy Day anniversary, described the smooth transition from PDP administration led by former President Goodluck Jonathan to the All Progressives Congress (APC), as a big leap for the nation’s democracy.

Suicide bomber killed six at Borno wedding – Police- THE NATION

The Police Commissioner in Borno State, Mr. Aderemi Opadokun, has confirmed the killing of six people by a suicide bomber in Borno State.

He said the bomber struck at a wedding venue in Tashan Alade, Hawul local government area of the state.

Opadokun also said 30 people injured during the attack have been taken to hospital.He said, “I confirm the report of an alleged suicide bombing in Tashan Alade in Hawul LGA. The incident took place at a wedding fatiha.

“Presently, six persons all males whose identities are unknown are confirmed dead, while 30 others were injured.”

He said police has commenced investigations into the incident.

Jonathan Returns Home To Heroic Welcome-THE GUARDIAN

IT was a carnival of sorts yesterday in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, as people poured in their numbers onto the streets of the  tiny city to welcome their son, former President Goodluck Jonathan.

At a formal reception held in his honour at the Cultural Centre, Jonathan, who was overwhelmed by the crowd that thronged the centre, said he was grateful  to the people of Bayelsa, all Ijaw people and every Nigerian for all the support they gave him while he was present.

He said he will now dedicate his life to peace building across the country as he strongly believes in the unity of the nation.

Accompanied by almost all the immediate past minsters in his cabinet and some serving members of the Senate and House, Jonathan said he will continue to render services to the country any time the
need arises.

He thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for stating emphatically that he belongs to everybody but belongs to nobody as such disposition will endeared him to nation.
