Tension in River State is approaching melting point as the state deputy governor and the state chapter of the All Progessives Peoples Congress(APC) each other in war of words over the weekend.

The deputy Governor of the state, Tele Ikuru, who on the eve of the general election, dumped his boss, Rotimi Amaechi and All Progressives Congress (APC), and rejoined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has lashed out at the governor as “irresponsible”. Ikuru was reacting to Amaechi’s refusal to set up a transition committee to liaise with that set up by governor-elect, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, for smooth transition of power in the state. Pained by Amaechi’s refusal, Ikuru, who spoke at a press conference in Port Harcourt yesterday, in his capacity as Chairman of the Wike Transition Committee, told journalists that Amaechi’s behaviour, was the height of irresponsibility. He lamented the uncooperative attitude of the Amaechi administration and stated that the governor had turned down all entreaties to ensure that there was seamless transition on May 29.

In his remarks, Secretary of the committee, Mr. Frank Owhor, observed if the Amaechi could be appointed as a member of the Gen. Muhammadu Buhari transition, his refusal to do same in Rivers State only “confirms the conflict and contradiction in the character of Rt. Hon. Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi”. Owhor further disclosed that “letters dispatched to the Rivers State governor by personal delivery and DHL courier service, were rejected and returned”. “In another instance, a top ranking officer informed the transition committee that staff was under instruction not to receive any correspondence from the transition committee. Mails dispatched to the governor by electronic mail and also delivered to the Secretary to the State Government were not even acknowledged”, he said.

Meanwhile the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has branded Deputy Governor Tele Ikuru the modern Judas Iscariot who is willing to sell his master for material gain.

The party in a statement issued Sunday afternoon in Port Harcourt by the state chairman, Dr. Davies Ikanya, lambasted Ikuru for his unprovoked attack on Governor Chibuike Amaechi, a man who picked him from the gutter and made him whom he has become politically.

APC Chairman said “We read with shock the description of Governor Amaechi as ‘irresponsible’ by Engr. Tele Ikuru during his ill-fated press conference in Port Harcourt few days ago, which he addressed in his new capacity as the Chairman of the Transition Committee set up by Nyesom Wike, the INEC-declared governor of Rivers state.

“It is sad that after serving as Amaechi’s Deputy for over seven years, Ikuru, who several times in the past described Gov. Amaechi as the ‘Hero’ of Rivers politics and the best political exponent from the state, is suddenly singing a different tune. This is the height of ingratitude and paints Ikuru in his true colours as a Judas Iscariot who is ever ready to sell his master for mundane gain,” Rivers APC said.

The party described Ikuru’s attack on Amaechi as unwarranted, saying: “Amaechi’s love for Ikuru is legendary. He chose him as his deputy despite Ikuru having teamed up with Sir Celestine Omehia and others to frustrate Amaechi’s governorship ambition during the ill-fated PDP primaries in 2007. With God’s intervention the Supreme Court in its wisdom revalidated Amaechi’s mandate as the authentic PDP guber candidate, thus making him the governor.
