Court jails 2 for stealing wheelbarrow

An Abuja Grade 1 area court has sentenced two persons to six weeks imprisonment for stealing an umbrella and wheelbarrows in Kubwa.

Shaidu Yakubu Mohammed, 22, and Bashir Ahmed, 18, all of Byazhin, Kubwa, were convicted for joint act, theft and causing hurt, offences that contradict Sections 79, 287 and 242 of the Penal Code.
The prosecutor, Babajide Olanipekun, told the court that one Shehu Mohammed, of PW, reported at a Kubwa police station, on December 6, of how the accused, jointly in furtherance of a common intention, acted in a dubious manner and dishonestly stole six empty paint containers, one big umbrella valued at N5,000, and six wheelbarrows valued at N30,000.

He said the accused were arrested while attempting to escape with the stolen items, adding that they acted violently and hit him with an object, resulting into the complainant sustaining injury on his right leg.
When the charges were read to the accused, they pleaded guilty and were sentenced to six weeks imprisonment by the judge, Mohammed Marafa with an option of paying N1, 500 as fine.

Similarly, two persons were sentenced to three months imprisonment by the same court for stealing water-pumping machine in Dawaki, Bwari Area Council.
Ani Chinedu and Sunday Moses, both of Dawaki, were convicted for joint act and attempt to commit offence, offences contrary to Sections 79 and 95 of the Penal Code.

The prosecutor, Babajide Olanipekun, told the court that one Akura Morison of same address, reported at the Dutsen Alhaji Police Station of how the accused conspired and trespassed into his construction site, located at Dawaki, and attempted to steal his water pumping machine valued at N25, 000.

When the charges were read to the accused, they pleaded guilty and were sentenced to three months imprisonment each by the judge, Mohammed Marafa, with an option of paying N3, 000 as fine.
