There was panic in the Jos/Bukuru metropolis on Wednesday afternoon following reports that a lion had escaped from the Jos wildlife park.
Residents around the park had to lock themselves indoors, while parents hurried to pick their wards from the school around the area.
Acting General Manager of the Plateau Tourism Cooperation, John Doy, told newsmen that the lion escaped in the morning when it was being fed.

He said the lion, which had been in captivity for a while, slipped through the gate of its cage when it was opened for routine feeding.

“It is believed that the animal is still within the premises of the park, and we are struggling to recapture it but we want members of the public to be vigilant,” he said.

“We have already informed all security agencies to come to the park’s assistance,” he added.
The spokesman of the state Police Command, Abuh Emmanuel, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), confirmed the news, adding that the park’s authorities were doing everything possible to recapture the animal.

However, a source from the wildlife park alleged that the animal had been killed by security operatives.
